A U.S. volunteer putting the finishing touches on a Tiny Clinic.

The Aowin District Directorate asked us to build the next Yonkofa clinic in Limankrom because of the intense need for medical services and midwifery in the area. Due to COVID, we could not risk bringing U.S. volunteers (and COVID) to the rural villages, so we shifted models. Our organizations sends several cargo containers of medical supplies to Ghana each year, why not convert those containers into Tiny Clinics? This way, we could continue to bring trained medical professionals to permanent residence in the village.

After the first Tiny Clinic was built, we decided this was a feasible model and took a critical look at our list of potential clinic sites. It appeared we could get a truck with crane into 10 more sites! We have met so many wonderful organizations, all in Georgia so far…. each one completing one of these amazing container conversions for us. We plan to provide two Tiny Clinic buildings to each site, one for general health, and one for maternity care. The sites that are operating with one building, will be supplied with a second, as soon as we are able. We also include solar panels for power, and roofing sheets to cover the entire clinic and make a large porch for a waiting area.

We have a system of purchasing containers, dropping them off in parking lots for construction work, picking them up with a tow truck, taking them to a crane, using the crane to put it on a chassis, bringing it to a warehouse to fill with medical supplies, and shipping to Ghana. The village prepares by donating the land, clearing the site, and providing the labor to prepare the concrete foundation. A Ghana-owned freight company, Conship, volunteered to take the containers out to the villages with their truck and crane. The trip takes between 18 hours and 3 days, depending of road condition. The containers are placed on a 45’ X 25’ concrete slab. The local villagers cut the steel for the windows and doors (which are already framed from the inside), and put up the shade cover.

ConShip and community volunteers in the village of Limonkrom getting the first Tiny Clinic situated on the concrete slab. Next the villagers built the shade cover, cut the windows and doors, and painted it.

The final component is getting the wells drilled for reliable and clean water. We have planned to drill them this dry season, with fundraising support from EcoWater.

So far, these ten Tiny Clinics are completed or in process. With our partners for medical donations and shipping, we have shipped over $10,000,000 worth of DONATED medical supplies, mostly INSIDE the clinics, in 2022-2023.
